Tinsley’s Tips to help you save money & ENERGY

  • Air Conditioning
  • Keep air conditioner filters clean.
  • Set your thermostat to the highest comfortable temperature.

    Water Heaters
  • Set water heater thermostat to 120 degrees.
  • Insulate the tank & pipes of older model water heaters.
  • Turn the water heater off if gone longer than a weekend.
  • Purchase a timer, to turn off/on your water heater when you use it the most.

    Washing & Drying Clothes
  • Wash full loads of clothes in coolest possible water.
  • Over drying wastes energy & sets in wrinkles.
  • Select a cycle with no final drying time or stop after the final rinse.
  • Cleaning your lint filter after every load & not overloading the dryer     increases energy efficiency
  • Dry loads one right after another. You’ll use less energy since the dryer is already heated.

    Dishwasher & Water Savings
  • Run the dishwasher only when it’s full.
  • A low-flow shower head can reduce water use by 50-70%.
  • Fix leaky faucets - one drip per second can equal up to 200 gallons a month.
  • Turn off water when shaving/brushing your teeth.
  • Purchase a water saving toilet.

    Cooking Tips
  • Plan meals so several things cook at the same time in the oven.
  • Try using a pressure cooker.
  • Baking or microwaving defrosted foods uses one-third less energy than   starting with frozen food.
  • Select flat-bottomed pans that fit the heating elements & use lids to retain  heat and decrease cooking times.
  • Cool foods to room temperature before placing them in the refrigerator.
  • Keep the freezer full. The fuller the freezer, the less energy it takes to keep the food frozen.

    Lighting
  • Compact fluorescent lights can save up to 75% in lighting energy, produce  more light & last up to 10 times longer compared to incandescent bulbs.
  • Turn off all lights, TVs & stereos when no one is using the room.
  • Tungsten-halogen incandescent bulbs cut lighting costs by 15%.
  • When possible use one large bulb rather than several small ones - a 100   watt bulb produces more light with less energy than 2 - 60 watt bulbs.
  • Dimmer switches are actually smarter.
  • Place floor lamps & hanging lamps in corners - the reflection gives you    more light.

    Heating & Cooling
  • Keep temperature between 36-40 degrees in the refrigerator & between    0-5 degrees in freezer.
  • Drain a gallon of water once a year through the faucet at the bottom of the  water heater, this can remove sediment that decreases energy efficiency.

It’s always a good idea to hang onto appliance manuals.
